Color Theory

Students have finished their color wheels and scales and learned all about Color Theory!  After our color wheels and scales we moved onto one day of grid drawing to begin practicing for their final project in the color theory unit.  Students are currently working on their final project by using a picture of themselves to transfer a drawing from one smaller grid to a larger grid.  As a class we have divided all of our faces into 4-6 different shades and students will be applying a color scheme to their faces.  We in the end stages of finishing our drawings and beginning our painting. 

This project will be due Tuesday 10/15!

Things to remember while completing this project:

1. Draw lightly, you may have to erase your pencil lines if you use light colors (including your grid lines)!!
2. When mixing your colors, make sure you are mixing enough to cover ALL of that number
• For instance, if you have purple as your 3rd shade/color and you have a lot of space to cover, mix more than enough paint to cover your entire area.  The chances of you getting the same purple again are VERY SLIM!  **Mix in container!**
3. Paint light colors FIRST!
4. Paint neatly and cleanly!  Stay inside the lines and make solid edges!

I apologize for the lack of posting within the last month!  We, as a class, have not referenced the blog much, but I would like to get back on track for students (and parents) to know what we are doing in class each day.

So far in class we have practiced and completed our Contour Unit.  For details on anything you may have missed, please contact me for specific directions.

From here on out...lets start with where we are currently!...

Students just began their Color Theory unit and we have began painting our color wheels and color scales.  We talked about primary colors, secondary colors, tertiary colors as well as many color schemes.  If you would like to check out the notes (in a PowerPoint) you may do so on Cole 3.0 under Files/Links.  Students are currently in the process of completing their color wheel and scales which I have posted slides with visual directions below.  Each student received a color wheel worksheet as well as a color scales worksheet.  Students will need to mix the colors correctly and complete the color wheel and scales.  When they are finished (and dry) they need to be cut out and glued into their sketchbooks.

Monday 8/26 - Wednesday 8/28

Students finished up their Denver Skyline painting on Monday and we began learning about the  Elements of Art and the Principles of Design.  Once students learned the vocabulary, they began their own sketchbook project using the vocabulary words, the definition and a picture or drawing showing they understand what each element and principle mean.  These 14 vocabulary words are words we will discuss on a daily basis and it is crucial for students to understand what they are.

The sketchbook project will be due on Wednesday during class.

The second half of Wednesdays class, students will be moving into their first unit: contour line drawing.  Students will take very brief notes on the different types of lines in art and then they will try gesture drawing, outline drawing and contour drawing.  Next class we will get more in depth to what we are looking for in contour line drawings and complete a few long concentrated drawings. 

Our first ARTiFact is listed below!  ARTiFacts is our daily vocabulary word and we will start class off with one each day!

The first week! Tuesday 8/20- Monday 8/26

To get this drawing and painting class started, we began with an all class painting of the Denver Skyline.  We discussed and practiced mixing paint colors to create new colors.  How to lighten and darken colors for different parts of the painting and we learned about brush control.  This intro project is done to get students excited about art and to give a little background about how to be successful in your art work. 

Students will receive a participation grade for their Skyline painting.
